Triangles in Composition

kittens-1It is always fun to photograph kittens. Last week we had three slightly scared but sweet kittens. They weren’t very active when we first put them in the box/studio so I went to work quickly. They just happened to line up in a perfect triangulated pose. The grey tabby was slightly further away than the others but one gentle scoop by the handlers just slid her snugly up against the others creating a lovely triangle of three beautiful kitten faces.

The triangulation of subject matter is a technique that painters and photographers have long used. It is a way of organizing the composition to make it more appealing through balance and flow. Check out the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper for examples.

I would love to say that I planned this shot this way but no way. It was luck, three cooperative kitties, two great handlers and being ready for whatever shot comes my way.
