On occasion I use toys to engage an otherwise shy or reserved kitten (or dog) for some of the pictures. This is Bailey a sweet kitty currently available at the Roanoke Valley SPCA. She was quiet and a bit camera-shy, once we brought out the pink puff on the string she came to life and began to play. Toys can also be used to help focus an animal’s attention.
The only word of caution when using toys is to wait until they are needed before pulling them out. An overstimulated animal can be just as hard to photograph. It is always best to wait a beat to see just how the animal reacts to the box before I start pulling out the toys.
